Hope Begins With Education
At HopeLink World, we believe education can change the direction of a child's life.
For many children, going to school is not simply about having a classroom. They need a uniform, shoes, books, school supplies, meals, and financial support to remain in school. For children growing up in children's homes or with extended family after losing parents, these needs are even harder to meet.
Across Africa, 118 million children and youth are out of school — and nearly 90% of children living in extreme poverty are in sub-Saharan Africa[reference:0][reference:1]. Poverty is the single biggest barrier: nine out of ten children from the poorest households never complete even primary education[reference:2].
HopeLink World works to remove these barriers and help vulnerable children access the education they deserve.
Learn About HopeLink WorldThe Challenges African Children Face Today
Before we can talk about hope, we must be honest about the barriers. These are not abstract problems — they are the daily realities that keep children out of classrooms across Africa.
Political Instability & Conflict
Armed conflicts and insecurity remain among the most pressing barriers to education across Africa. In West and Central Africa alone, nearly 15,000 schools closed in 2025 due to violence, affecting an estimated 3 million children[reference:3]. In Sudan, 8 million school-aged children are out of school after more than 1,000 days of war[reference:4]. Children displaced by conflict lose their homes, their schools, and often their childhoods.
Famine, Drought & Climate Shocks
Recurrent drought and famine-like conditions repeatedly force school closures as families migrate in search of water and pasture. In Kenya, school attendance fell by over 10% during drought periods[reference:5]. The 2023–2024 El Niño drought disrupted learning for millions and left nearly 10 million people without food[reference:6]. When animals perish and crops fail, families lose both income and food — and children are the first to drop out.
Extreme Poverty
Nearly 90% of children in extreme monetary poverty — surviving on less than $3 per day — live in sub-Saharan Africa[reference:7]. For these families, even "free" education carries hidden costs: uniforms, shoes, exercise books, examination fees, and transport. Nine out of ten children from the poorest households never complete primary school[reference:8]. Poverty does not just limit education — it passes from one generation to the next.
Child Labour & Exploitation
An estimated 41 million children in Eastern and Southern Africa are engaged in child labour — roughly one in five[reference:9]. In Kenya alone, 1.3 million children work instead of attending school[reference:10]. Child labour has a significant negative effect on education completion, particularly for girls[reference:11]. Children who work lose not only their schooling but their right to a childhood.
Orphanhood & Family Breakdown
In Kenya, 30 to 45% of orphans end up in institutions, often because extended families cannot afford to care for them[reference:12]. Children in charitable children's institutions face marginalisation, stigma, and disrupted learning[reference:13]. The number of orphans and vulnerable children receiving government cash support rose from 259,654 in 2022 to 428,421 in 2025 — a sign of how many families are struggling[reference:14].
Learning Poverty
Being in school does not guarantee learning. Across Africa, only 10.8% of pupils reach minimum proficiency in reading and mathematics by the end of primary school[reference:15]. In Eastern and Southern Africa, nine in ten children aged 10 cannot read a simple sentence with comprehension[reference:16]. Without foundational literacy and numeracy, a child's future opportunities shrink dramatically.

Education Can Change a Child's Future
Poverty should never decide whether a child gets to learn.
Across communities in Africa, families face impossible choices when they cannot afford school-related expenses. A child may have the desire to learn but lack a uniform, shoes, books, transport, or school fees. Conflict may have taken their home. Drought may have taken their livelihood. Poverty may have taken their hope.
HopeLink World exists to help bridge that gap.
When we support a child's education, we are not only helping them attend school today — we are helping break a cycle that has trapped families for generations. Education is one of the most powerful tools for ending poverty.

From Kenya, For Africa
HopeLink World began with a simple belief: a child's future should not be limited by the circumstances they were born into.
Founded in Kenya, HopeLink World was created to connect children in need — orphans, children in care homes, and those from families facing extreme hardship — with people who believe in the power of education.
We began by focusing on practical needs: school fees, clothing, uniforms, shoes, books, and learning supplies. These are the barriers that keep children out of classrooms every single day.
Our long-term vision is to grow this work and reach more communities across Africa while working closely with local schools, families, communities, volunteers, and supporters.

"Amina's New Beginning"
Amina is a bright young student who loves reading and dreams of becoming a teacher. After losing her parents, she came to live at a children's home in Kenya. Her family had faced financial challenges long before that — the kind that make it impossible to provide school fees, a uniform, or even a pair of shoes.
Without support, Amina would have joined the millions of children across Africa who never finish primary school. With help for school supplies, clothing, and education-related expenses, she can focus on what matters most — learning.
Her story represents the thousands of children who simply need someone to believe in their future.
